What A, An and The Are
English keeps a slot open in front of every singular countable noun, and something has to fill it: a, an, the, or a word like my, this or one. Leaving it empty is not an option — I am student is not a sentence. The two articles then do different jobs, and the difference is about what your listener already knows.

First mention: the listener does not yet know which dog.
I see a dog in the street.
You have not heard about this dog before, so a introduces it.

Second mention: both speakers can identify the dog.
I see the dog in the street.
Both of us already know which dog is meant, so the points back at it.

A or an?
An exists for one reason: two vowel sounds in a row are awkward to say. So the choice is made by the first sound of the word that follows, and the spelling has no vote.
CONSONANT SOUND

Only before a vowel SOUND — and the word right after the article is the one that decides, not the noun: a film, an interesting film.

Singular, plural or uncountable — the does not care, because its job is pointing rather than counting.
an hour (the h is silent, so the word opens with a vowel sound) · a university (spelled with a u but said YOO, a consonant sound). Say the next word to yourself before you choose.

PLURALS IN GENERAL
Dogs are friendly animals.
A statement about all of them, so the noun stands bare.

Uncountable nouns never take a or an at all.

The institution rather than the building, and the everyday phrases built the same way.

go to school means attending as a student, while go to the school means walking to the building — a parent does the second.

The last row is the whole lesson in two sentences. A pen means any pen will do; the pen on your desk means one specific pen that you and I can both see. The also arrives with no introduction at all whenever the situation already makes the noun obvious: Close the door, The teacher is late, Where is the toilet? — there is only one door, one teacher, one toilet in question.

Common mistakes
Incorrect:My sister is nurse.
Correct:My sister is a nurse.
A singular countable noun cannot stand alone, and a job title is no exception.
Incorrect:I have car.
Correct:I have a car.
Car is a singular countable noun, so it needs an article even when the number is beside the point.
Incorrect:He is good teacher.
Correct:He is a good teacher.
The article opens the whole phrase, adjective included: a good teacher, not good a teacher.
Incorrect:I wait for a hour.
Correct:I wait for an hour.
Hour begins with a vowel sound because the h is silent.
Incorrect:I like the music very much.
Correct:I like music very much.
Speaking about music in general takes no article; the music is one particular piece.
Incorrect:The children go to the school every day.
Correct:The children go to school every day.
Go to school means attending it. Adding the turns it into a walk to the building.
Incorrect:I go to the bed at ten.
Correct:I go to bed at ten.
Another fixed phrase of the same kind: go to bed is the activity, not a journey to the furniture.
Incorrect:She has a books in her bag.
Correct:She has some books in her bag.
A and an take a singular noun. A plural takes some, a number, or nothing at all.
