Because and So
The conjunctions lesson (A1) taught the basics: a full sentence follows because, so goes before the result, and one sentence uses only one of the two. This lesson uses because and so to tell stories about the past, and practises the places where A2 learners often go wrong.
The reason answers why?. The result is what happened because of it.
BECAUSE + REASONresult first, reason second
She stayed home because she was sick.
Staying home is what happened. Being sick is why.
SO + RESULTreason first, result second
She was sick, so she stayed home.
The same story, told in the other order.
Because goes before the reason, so goes before the result, and each half has its own subject.

The patterns
A clause follows because and so: a group of words with its own subject and verb, like she was sick.

To use so, swap the halves: The bus didn't come, so we took a taxi.

So starts the result half, usually with a comma before it.
ANSWERING WHY
Why …?—BecauseSV
Why were you late? — Because I missed the train.
Why asks for the reason, so the answer starts with because.

When to use each one
Explaining something
I didn't eat breakfast because I got up late.
Say what happened first, then the reason.
Signal words: because · the reason comes second
Giving the reason first
Because it was her birthday, we bought a cake.
When the because half comes first, put a comma after it.
Signal words: Because …, · a comma after the reason
Telling what happened next
The last bus left at ten, so we walked home.
Common when you tell a story in order.

Answering Why
Why didn't you answer? — Because my phone was in my bag.
When you speak, the because half alone is enough.

So vs. But
So and but both go between two halves. Use so when the second half is what you expect. Use but when it is the opposite.

Common mistakes
Incorrect:Because the road was wet, so he drove slowly.
Correct:Because the road was wet, he drove slowly.
Use one connector, not two. Keep because, or drop it and write The road was wet, so he drove slowly.
Incorrect:Why did you go home? — Because tired.
Correct:Why did you go home? — Because I was tired.
Even a short answer needs a subject and a verb after because.
Incorrect:She didn't come to class, so she was sick.
Correct:She didn't come to class because she was sick.
Being sick is the reason, so it comes after because. With so, the sentence says missing class made her sick.
Incorrect:I lost my keys, so waited outside.
Correct:I lost my keys, so I waited outside.
The half after so needs its own subject, even for the same person.
Incorrect:So the tickets were expensive, we didn't go.
Correct:The tickets were expensive, so we didn't go.
So goes before the result, not at the start of the reason. To give the reason first, write Because the tickets were expensive, we didn't go.

The closed shop is still the reason. With because, the result comes first and the reason comes after because.

The answer can be just the because half, but that half needs a subject: I needed. Why asks for a reason, so the answer starts with because.

The half after so needs its own subject, she, even for the same person as in the first half.

Answer: A. The rain stopped, so we went out.
The rain stopping is the reason and going out is the result. So goes right before the result, never before the reason.

After an easy test, you expect most people to pass. Many students failing is the opposite. The connector is but.
